How I Make Time To Write

How I Make Time To Write

These past few months have been a whirlwind. We all get swept up in the business of life sometimes.

I spend my days chasing a toddler around, being pregnant with our second child, church responsibilities, trying to stay fit, prepare healthy meals, laundry, and other activities. How do I have the time to write?

A better question might be: How do I make the time to write?

On top of limited time, I also seem to have too many ideas of things I want to write about! It’s a blessing to have so many ideas and projects I’m excited about, but it can also get overwhelming.

Since the start of the new year, I have launched this website. I have grown my Instagram following to over 2,000 followers. I have created an Instagram and blog posting schedule to help me stay on top of things in the coming months.

I have completed six new picture book manuscripts. I’ve done a lot of editing, attended workshop groups, and have entered past and new manuscripts in contests and have sent some to publishers and agents.

In regards to my poetry, I have completed and entered a chapbook to a contest. I am so excited to start sharing some of my content from that chapbook, hopefully this summer. I have also been busy working on two separate poetry collections.

I am proud of myself in all that I have been able to accomplish. I wanted to share with you all some things I’ve been doing that have allowed me to do so much in a short amount of time:

Tip One: Make Lists

I am a neurotic list maker. It is seriously one of my obsessions. I have a list of my favorite books, a list of movies to watch, a to-do list for daily tasks, a writer’s to-do list.

Make lists of things you need to do. And assign reasonable deadlines to them.

My to-do list of daily tasks is not just a giant list of everything I need to get done. That’s overwhelming. I assign each thing on my to-do list a day of the week. That way I make time for it and don’t get overwhelmed by a seemingly endless to-do list.

My writer’s to-do list also has deadlines of when I think I can complete projects, enter contests, and send off submissions.
